I have very fond memories of Germany. I visited Munich and a
small town next to the Rhine in 1999, and I loved the country and the
people. One of my wife's best friend is engaged to a German, and
she's in Germany right now.
I understand the burden modern German carry about the Nazi past.
In fact, I had to defend a nurse with German ancestry in the ER last
weekend. Another nurse was making a comment about Germans being
"mean", and I jumped in and said "Some of the meanest people I know are
Chinese".
It's unfortunate that Germans get vilified in the media. Just
imagine computer games. In FPS games, it's justified to shoot
mutant monsters, savage beasts, aliens, and Nazi soldiers.
They're lumped together as some of the worst evil mankind has ever seen.
But why should modern Germans be blamed for the crime that they have no
control whatsoever? It's unfair, and people need to get over that.

i'm 40 now, which some of you will think is old. maybe from your perspective it is, but the 40 years feel just the same to me as whatever your own total of days feels to you. my point being, that i was born within 20 years of the wars end. as a child, i thought that 20 years was almost an eternity, and that the war had been a long, long time ago. now i realise just how close '20 years ago' actually is. one day, god willing, you guys will too.
all i can say about modern germany is good beer, good football, and no sense of humour or good music.

Forceflow;
nah its DDR; like the RAM
There are a few cities considered very beautiful over here. As long as one is used to it he never recognises it. At least I don't. I live in one of the most decent and beautiful places in Germany; and tell you what: I don't care.
After the last world war there was one thing taken from Germany. National pride. Thats why there are 5M unemployed people around. Because nobody is keen on working in a country he isn't proud of.
I just was out for a walk. And I came to think about it. So far I realised: I'm not proud of being a German. But again: These days I ain't proud of anything.

Well, not everybody. Many eastern-eurpoeans have the unspoken dream of moving to America.

Well... I would argue that many Americans think less of this country than the rest of the world does... it depends on whether you live in a red state or a blue. Any college campus you go to will be full of post-adolescent angst about how "evil" America is.
Now there you have a good example of how Americans might view Germans. I've just used a German word which is an entirely accepted part of our language.
Honestly, I think WWII jokes are hilarious in kind of a morbid way, and I have spent a large amount of time studying the history of the war, but that doesn't mean I hate Japs and Krauts. Probably a good quarter of the American populace can claim German ancestry, and we owe a very large portion of our culture to Martin Luther. I would argue that historically German culture has played a role in the formation of America second only to the English.
I don't know much about present day Germany, or any other country really. All the more reason to visit eventualy!
