Been listening to the Bloc Party album "Silent Alarm" a bit lately, and
enjoying it. Some of the tracks are particularly memorable, such as
"Like Eating Glass", "Helicopter", and my personal favourite,
"Pioneers". Kinda make me think of a more upbeat and rocky Coldplay for
some reason. Worth checking out for any indie rock fans.

Hm. I bought Iron Maiden's "Brave New World" and "Rock in Rio"
recently, love both of those. Also finally got Dark Side of the Moon
(Have the vinyl version too). I've also got the vinyl for Maiden's
"Live After Death".

I'm waiting for and should receive the Judas Priest box set "Metalogy"
within the next few days. Saw their concert last month, it was great.

Yeah funny you should mention them, a friend of mine gave me a CD with
"Like Eating Glass" and "Pioneers" a week ago. I liked both of
them.

It's funny, if you look up national statistics on audioscrobbler I think Bloc Party is the most popular artist for the UK.

If any of you use launch at yahoo to watch videos, you should check out

I just got In Through the Out Door; Led Zeppelin album number
8. It's really not what i was hoping for. If hillbillies
tried to make techno music, this is the sound they'd probably end up
with. Zep's early stuff is definitely heaps and bound better than
the stuff towards the end of their carreer. Although Physical
Graffiti is awesome...

Hrmm, haven't updated this in a while, so yeah, 14 CDs I've gotten recently.
A-Ha - Analogue: Apparently this is an old-school band (ergo from the 80's), but this CD was released around a week ago so I can reasonably pretend that I'm "with it." I guess this could be described as soft pop rock, but less gay. Pretty damned good.

Air - Talkie Walkie: Really nice electronic pop. Bravo. Some very catchy songs, some aren't quite so good but there's no bad ones.

Bedouin Soundclash - Sounding A Mosaic: Umm, reggae rock? Sort of. Basically. Don't usually like reggae, but I normally like rock, and mixed with reggae it's apparently pretty good.

Bell X1 - Music In The Mouth: I was rather disappointed when I noticed these guys on one of those accursed O.C. soundtrack mixes. It seems that basically anything I think I "find" has already been found. Switches between soft and, um, non-soft rock. Wow. Apparently I listen to a lot of soft rock. I swear to you I'm straight.

Chad Van Gaalen - Infiniheart: Oh man, I don't even know. His lyrics can best be defined as pretty crazy. So basically, crazy rock. That's probably the worst review ever, but whatEVER.

Hanalei - We Are All Natural Disasters: Acoustic rock with lovely lyrics, very nice stuff. Very.

James Blunt - Back To Bedlam: More acoustic rock with even lovelier lyrics. Sweet, sweet album.

Nada Surf - The Weight Is A Gift: It's friggin' Nada Surf so it can't be bad, right? Right. Pretty danged awesome CD, can't think of any song that gets worse than decent.

Pink Martini - Hang On Little Tomato: Man, this is like orchestral music. I saw 'em on Conan, there's probably 15 people. Good tunes overall, a few originals and then some really obscure covers (you know they're obscure when they're sung in Japanese).

Schandmaul - Von Spitzbuben Und Anderen Halunken: German folk rock, which basically has more of an emphasis on rock. Pretty hard to describe, really.

Squirrel Nut Zippers - Hot: Lovely swing music with lovely vocals and pretty danged lovely lyrics to boot.

Squirrel Nut Zippers - Perennial Favorites: Overall, this one's definitely better than Hot, but I'm biased since I've owned this one on cassette for years. Top notch.

The Minders - Golden Street: Uh, I don't really know how to sell this one, just good 'ol indie-pop (i.e. catchy but not retarded).

Travis - The Man Who: Another good Travis CD, 'nuff said. I don't care so much for the last song, but the rest is good.
One day you'll know what you're talking about, I can hardly imagine

I don't know if this qualifies as girl music or what, but I've been
listening to Pete Yorn's CD "Day I Forgot" for the past 24 hours almost
constantly. I started listening to it last night around 11
PM. I listened to it off and on as I tried to finish off a final
paper before going to bed at 5 AM. Then I woke up and had to run
errands around campus and I was listening to it on my iPod.

Anyway -- I really like this album, and I was surprised since my sister
turned me on to him and I never expected to like it. It's late
night, somewhat sad, stewing music. It'll make you long for an
ex-girlfriend, or help you relish a blue mood. It's not
appropriate for all times, but when you're up late writing a paper and
feeling sorry for yourself, its the perfect soundtrack.

If you want to check out a few songs, I would recommend:
  • Turn of the Century
  • Long Way Down
  • Crystal Village
I almost forgot, the music is acousticy with some drums and a backup
electric guitar. There's something about the melodies and the
inflection in his voice that really evokes emotion. I feel like
I'm walking around in a little movie when I have the music playing in
my headphones.

I liked Crystal Village a lot actually, but the other two didn't really
work for me. Might check out some more in the hope of finding more like
that one though; does he have any similar, more upbeat tracks like that
you can suggest?

You ever listened to Our Lady Peace before by the way? Dunno why I
suddenly thought of them, as they aren't really that much like Pete
Yorn by the sounds of things, but they are a great band I've a feeling
you might like. Try out "Potato Girl", "Right Behind You", "Somewhere
Out There" or "Clumsy" for a fairly good example of what they play.

I first heard Our Lady Peace maybe 5 years ago, but I never really got
into them. My music collection hasn't really evolved much, so I
still have "4AM", "Starseed", "Life", "Is Anybody Home", and "Clumsy".

I'll try to somehow find a way to get ahold of the other songs you recommended that I haven't heard.

As for Pete Yorn, the songs I like on the CD are the quieter / sadder
ones, so I can't tell if the more upbeat ones aren't as good, or if I'm
just not in the mood.

"When You See the Light" is more upbeat, but I don't like it as much as the others.

"Burrito" is edgier, with a faster beat, but again, I don't like it as much as the others.

"All at Once" is another song I like, but its somewhat sad.

"Come Back Home" sounds like it could be a radio single, and it's pretty good.

"Pass Me By" Despite the title, the guitar is fairly peppy, so you might like this.

"Committed" Is probably one of the more upbeat songs on the CD, but its just average in my opinion.

Hope that helps a bit.

Also -- have you heard of Guster? They're very chill, and I like them quite a bit.

I got;

Barenaked Ladies - Everything to Everyone... it's great. Listen to it now.

Velvet Revolver - Contraband... it's also great, and listen to it now as well.

R.E.M - The best of R.E.M... it's not as great as the previous two, but has its moments.

Ozzy Ozbourne - The Essential Ozzy Osbourne... 29 songs on 2 discs of my idol. It's awesome. Like sliced bread.

Pearl Jam - Ten... it's great.

Pearl Jam - Riot Act... it's also great.

This has been FrenchToast's indepth review.

I've just started listening to Van Halen (since listening to Beat it by Michael Jackson with Van Halens amazing solo). So many songs I recognise but never knew it was them...

On the note of Van Halen, anyone know how he died?

Alex and Eddie are still alive, so is Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth oh ... and Michael Anthony. No one from Van Halen has died actually. Eddie even has a kid who plays drums ... his wife is/was a news castor or actress, I can't remember which.

Oh, to clear any confusion:

Alex Van Halen : Drummer
Eddie Van Halen : Guitar/Keyboard
Michael Anthony : Bass
David Lee Roth/Sammy Hagar/Gary Cherone : 1st/2nd/3rd lead singers of the band
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Maybe I got it confused with some other famous guitarist or something. Would love to see Van Halen play live, that would be legendary! Oh, and I know who the members are

Did you also know that Eddie was originally a drummer, but his brother Alex kept going on his kit and playing it, and eventually Eddie learnt that his brother was in fact better than him, so he learnt guitar. Legend- invented double hand finger tapping.

actually, two-hand legatto style playing has been around for centuries myrk....eddie just helped make it popular in rock circles.... ever hear of a cat named stanley jordan?... the epitomy of leggato....

excerpt from his website....

Stanley Jordan
Multifaceted Musician

TRYING TO DESCRIBE STANLEY JORDAN IN SIMPLE TERMS is like trying to explain Einstein's Theory of Relativity in ten words or less. No matter what you say, you'd be leaving a lot out. And yet, that is probably what you've already done if you haven't heard the whole story. Best known as a guitarist who has made major technical and musical contributions to his instrument, Stanley Jordan has already made a name for himself as one of the most significant guitarists of the latter 20th century. After seeing him perform with his trio at the Montreal Jazz Festival, Los Angeles Times jazz critic Leonard Feather was prompted to write, ?Genius is a word too often tossed around in musical circles, but it has been rightfully applied to Stanley Jordan.?

The Technique
Stanley uses a technique called the ?Touch? or ?Tapping? technique to achieve a level of orchestral complexity equaling that of a keyboard instrument. He can sound like two or three guitarists at the same time with no overdubs or other studio techniques. He says, ?Basically, I use 'hammer-ons' and 'pull-offs.' These techniques have been around for a long time.? But Stanley Jordan has raised this art to an unprecedented musical level, and has used it to express his unique musical vision. Other players, such as Jimmy Webster, Lenny Breau, Edward Van Halen and Emmett Chapman have also used the technique, but Stanley Jordan discovered and developed it independently, and today he is widely regarded as the first ?Touch Virtuoso.? He also uses traditional flat-picking and finger picking. A good example is ?When Julia Smiles? from the album Flying Home. Much of the attention surrounding his sudden rise to fame in the mid 80s was based on his technique. Because the technique is so startling, so strikingly unusual, it is easy to see how it can make a dominating first impression. But what has become more and more clear through the years, is that he has the musicianship and creativity to match. His music is embued with a combination of passion, sensitivity, humor and shear brilliance. His technique never overwhelms his music. In fact, he says that since the early 80s he has been focusing much more on expressiveness than on speed and complexity. Could it be then, that many of his listeners still have not heard the full range of his abilities? Certainly what they have heard has made his live concerts legendary.

heres a linky to the site http://www.stanleyjordan.com/

Crazy... I wish I was my age now in 1978... I could have easily pioneered something- the amount of crazy shizzle I try and do, and all before I heard other people doing it. Thats why I love Van Halen and IA, all seem to do exactly what I always wanted to do, before I had heard of them or anything- as if they were me in 15 years or something

Just picked up By The Way by the Chili Peppers. Excelent
stuff. Combine Frusciante's crazy riffs with bass god Flea and
awesome lyrics from Kiedis... man. What a great band.

Anyhoo, I'm almost done my Zep collection, with only Coda left, but I
couldn't find that at HMV today. So I've started on my Chili

Their more recent stuff has great lyrics. Songs like
Californication and Under the Bridge all have meanings if you know the
story of Anthony's life. I read his autobiography, and after I've
made connections with the songs that I wouldn't have otherwise.

Under the Bridge (not really "recent" to be honest - it was on Blood
Sugar Sex Magic) and Californication (and obviously a few others) are
the exceptions though. Most of their stuff is competely random and used

Since were on the topic of Lyrics... The a few wordsmiths that I really enjoy:

Ani Difranco: that girl knows how to put a song together.

Beck: surrealism at its best

Jack Johnson: Lots of soul and subtely inventive wordplay

Eminem: The kid raps like a damn Samauri

I've been buying music off Itunes music store like crazy lately. It's amazing how easy it is to spend $0.99 for something good.. and how quickly that adds up! I've been on some kind of musical kick, lately, listening to everything from Beethoven to Stevie Ray Vaughan to bluegrass to Snoop Dog. I'm actually quite amazed at how large my musical pallette has grown in the past 32 years. There was a time when all I would listen to was Metallica, Slayer, Iron Maiden..etc. Now, I can connect to almost any music as long as it has heart.

I'll check it out Myrk-.

And Reno, I realize that's not recent, I didn't really think out my
post. What I meant to say was that their early stuff from the
80's has more random lyrics because they were just trying to put out
music to get big, but now they have a little more creative freedom, and
he's grown and puts more thought into lyrics. But yeah, there are
a lot of random ditty's... but they have the coolest groove.

One of my favourite Chili Peppers songs is Throw Away Your Television... it's awesome.

Hopefully their new album will have some more sweet songs... ahh who am I kidding, it will.

I really like what I've listened to so far, specifically "Under Control" and "The End Has No End".

Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism

Been listening to a crazy Japanese band called "ORANGE RANGE" recently.
They play...well I have no idea what you would call it to be honest,
but it's fun music. Sort of pop/rocky I guess, very upbeat (normally),
with somewhat rap style vocals from 3 or 4 seperate vocalists switching
in and out all the time. Their song "Asterisk" was the opening song for
the anime series "Bleach" and is pretty easy to get hold of if you
fancy checking them out. Their latest album "Natural" is a lot more
polished and, in my opinion, enjoyable than their earlier stuff.

Other good japanese music worth checking out if you are into that sort of thing;

Asian Kung-Fu Generation

Home Made Kazoku

UVERworld

Scafull King

I find myself listening to this stuff more than anything at the moment for some reason.

I listen to B'z and X Japan for my Japanese music tastes, both kind of opposite ends of the music group, one's great fun music and the other is amazingly powerful and dramatic often, great mix of metal, symphony and just about everything else I highly recommend a listen to either.

I just bought a best of for Anthrax, the GTA: Vice City soundtrack (the big 7 disc one), 'Yer Favourites' by the Tragically Hip, The Prodigy 'Their Law' collection as well as the DVD. All have been good purchases.

I also opted NOT to buy a few nice Beastie Boys discs because of pathetic copy control that's labeled on the packages. If the copy protection proclaimations take up more of the package than the artists I ain't buying, especially if you require me to have anything more than standard CD playing equipment. You guys lost a sale, and a few other artists as well.

I'm obsessed with the song "Evil" by Interpol. I just got ahold
of the album, so that's replaced "Transatlanticism" as my go to CD for
the moment.

Interpol is always good- Been a big fan of theirs for a few years now. Antics is an OK CD, but the track Evil is just truly amazing. I could listen to that for hours. Slow Hands isn't too bad either. Great follow-up to Obstacle 1 ("Put the weights all around yourself" as opposed to "She puts the weights into my little heart").

Recently gotten into a few new bands-

Black Rebel Motorcylcle Club - B.R.M.C and Howl. Kinda folkey almost gospelly music (at least the CD Howl is (And please don't judge it based on the gospelly-ness of it... They really do have quality tunes)) If you're looking for an awesome track, check out "As Sure as the Sun" from B.R.M.C. Great song.

New Model Army - Circus. Pretty good, from my first impressions. Nice voical styles and kinda laid back yet soehow heavy rock feel to it. Good tracks from that include "Another Imperial Day," "Bluebeat," and "Prayer Flags." Again, these guys aren't religious, so don't freak out. Kthx.

Rogue Wave - Descended Like Vultures. Great little CD overall. Sounds a little bit more "indie" that I prefer, but still, some great songs on it. Highlights include "Bird on a Wire," "Are you on my Side?", "Salesman at the Day of the Parade." Great accoustic work mixed in with some off-hand vocal styles. Great harmonies in the first two of those songs, and the third one is mostly just an awesome accoustic-feeling song (not technically all accoustic- there are a few little effects strewn about it).

And finally, just because I'm a HUGE fan of the genre, this great all-instrumental band:

Red Sparowes - At The Soundless Dawn. Great little CD overall, especially if you're a fan of bands that mainly produce only music- no vocals or anything to muck it up. Great laid back feel to it, pretty well developed, and overall just a good background-music CD.

That's all then.

/me fades back into obscurity
Shameless plug.

Apparently I didn't include Rogue Wave in my list little list-a-thon. I got Bird On A Wire, thought it was great, got the rest of the CD, didn't like it so much. I need to stop raising my expectations so much after I listen to one song, I guess.

Been listening to a crazy Japanese band called "ORANGE RANGE" recently.
Oh man. I've been listening to a lot of their stuff too after getting into Bleach. "Asterisk" and "Locolotion" are my favorites. I have no idea what they're saying, but man, I think it sounds better that way!

Personally I don't like Asian Kung-Fu Generation though. Too up-beat, not enough rock.

Monqui, you turned me on to GSY!BE, and I'd love to check out that Red Sparowes CD. Too bad I can't get on IRC.

if you want a crazy little Japanese band, I bring you: Sex Machineguns!. Yeah. It's like the Sex Pistols, only MORE HARCORE. Or something. Neat little drum battle though.

If you want a couple'a RS tracks, hit their site up with this magical, clickable text.

Click the main image, then click "Music" at the bottom once the flash loads. Then, click the little arrow towards the bottom next to "More Releases." Anything in yellow is up for grabs.

And Hughbert- "Publish My Love" is absolute crap. I hate that song. Everything else from the CD though is listen-able to me. Therefore, I submit that you hate music and should just go shack up with that cat of yours somewhere.

<span style="color: white;">Nine Inch Nails. I actually heard a song of theirs other than Closer for the first time a couple weeks ago, now I can't get enough of this music. I've probably listened to "The Downward Spiral" and "The Fragile" 30 times or more (gotta love repeat all). I'm actually going to BUY A FEW ALBUMS! (gasp) just so I can encode better quality files (160kbps ogg) because I seriously hate 128kbps MP3... so lossy.

Maybe I look for more in music than "listen-able" Nah, you're right, I probably just hate music and I'm certainly bestial.
