<span style="color: white;">I'm not 100% sure this would be the right place to post this, but does anyone have any techno/trance recommendations? I'm looking to broaden my musical horizons and listen to something fresh (to me at least).

Loosely within the genre I like Rammstein (I said loosely), Juno Reactor, most Oakenfold I've heard (Dread Rock, Delerium - The Silence 2000, Ready Steady Go), some of the more techno-ish Marylin Manson, Final Fantasy - Set Me Free Trance Mix, NIN (again, loosely). Outside the genre I like Del tha Funkee Homosapien/Deltron 3030, Rage Against the Machine, Pantera, Sublime, Shadows Fall... basically good, real rock, not the mainstream crap taking over the world (or at least the States)

Ok- first- get Boards of Canada. They're fairly full of awesome. If you're looking for some darker stuff, check out the Silent Hill 3 and 4 soundtracks- there are some AWESOME songs on there (Sickness unto Foolish Death is phenomenal). They're mostly very dark, techno-industrial songs (plus the singers on a few of them are just amazing- they may not be the best singers ever, but they fit the theme so well). If it helps, the soundtracks were directed and made my Akira Yamaoka, so you may be able to find them listed under that name.

Apoptygma Berzerk has some awesome songs too- "Until the End of the World" is great. They're more gothy than I care for in general, but they're still not bad.
Shameless plug.

Same topic, different direction.

How many here have the Dish Network? Of those, how many listen to the Sirius Channels?

My reason is, which channels do you frequent so I can hear what you guys like to see how it sounds.

Obviously, I listen to channel's 6007 and 6008, which are 70's and 80's rock respectively.

<span style="color: white;">Thanks Monqui, I'm really diggin Boards of Canada. Fairly full of awesome is right, this is one of the kinds of music that I've been looking for for so long! Groovalicious, slick beats, very nice to chill out to. "Stereolab" and "Julie and Candy" are great. It's definitely a break from all the industrial Rammstein and NIN I've been listening to lately. Apoptygma Berzerk I'm not liking so much, though I've only heard two songs so far...

I'm going to an upcoming NIN concert  March 24th! Whee! Got tickets the other night!

Got the new Arctic Monkeys album "Whatever you say I am, that's what I
am not" today, and I've been enjoying it. It's just upbeat, jumpy,
rough-around the edges rock music with punk and ska influences. No deep
philosophical musings or pretentious lyrics, but plenty of lines that
will strike a chord with young folks in the UK at any rate ("there's
only music, so that there's new ring tones"). On first hearing their
big hit "I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor" I was a bit worried
they would have an album full of tracks that didn't live up to it, but
instead most of the tracks are actually stronger than that one. Check
out "You Probably Couldn't See For The Lights But You Were Looking At
Me", "From The Ritz To The Rubble", or "Red Light Indicates Doors Are
Secured" (a track title that will no doubt get a smile from us
gamers!), but to be honest most tracks are pretty indicative of their
style. Far from the most varied of albums, but their one slow track
"Riot Van" is probably the weakest of the lot so maybe the relentlessly
upbeat approach was a wise move!

Also got the new Yellowcard album "Lights and Sounds" a few days ago. I
really enjoyed their last and first proper album "Ocean Avenue", which
was pretty standard pop-punk with the fairly novel twist of having a
dedicated violin player in the band making them stand out a little. My
initial reaction to this new album was not being very impressed, but
while a few of the tracks really are quite dull, some of the others
have grown on me a whole lot. The title track "Lights and Sounds" is
good, solid pop-punk with a chorus thats catchy and ever-tempting to
sing a long to, and other tracks like "Sure Things Fall", "City of
Devils", and "Martin Sheen or JFK" are all great tracks for their own
reasons. Like many bands these days they have a token anti-war track
"Two Weeks From Twenty" that seems a bit too cliched and forced for my
liking, almost like they are just cashing in on the Green Day success.
Thankfully the album ends on a high note after a few mediocre tracks in
the latter half, with the really nice "How I Go" featuring orchestra
backup and guest female vocals which work nicely together with the lead
vocalist.

The new Ordinary Boys album "Brassbound" should be arriving tomorrow hopefully

The Garden State soundtrack is one of the "chillest" CD's I've listened to in a long time.

It's playing right now, and it fits my quiet mood perfectly.

If you're looking for more chilled stuff, check out Zero 7 - I think they even have a track on Garden State if I recall correctly, but Simple Things is a great album, IMO.

Morcheeba is a bit darker at times (try Blindfold or Trigger Hippie for a bit darker, Coming Down Gently and Shoulder Holster for lighter stuff), but still kinda chill-esque. Goldfrapp is a bit more out there in terms of sampling to instrument/vocal work ratio, but they're still pretty good. Utopia is just a beautiful song, Hairy trees and Lovely Head are pretty good too.

On an unrelated note, I've been listening to this crazy little band called "The Go! Team" recently, and I don't really know why, but I love it. Think crazy horns/drums mixed in with 2 parts school-children shouting lyrics and 1 part pure kinetic energy. Bottle Rocket is a bit lighter, The Power is On is just crazy-good, and The Ice Storm is just great. The album overall (Thunder Lightning Strike) is pretty good, as they keep things interesting and change styles a bit on each song.
Shameless plug.

Not sure if anyones listened to them or heard of them, but I love the
band called Hollywood Undead. They got some original songs and their
style is like a hip-hop/metal type sound (suprisingly they can go
together). Heres there link at their myspace page. Its the only site
they have until their official sites up. At the myspace, you can listen
to their songs.

Yeah I know its myspace

The songs No 5 and My Black Dahlia are my favorites. No 5 is a party
song and the other is just a good song I think. Any opinions
welcome.

Usually any music I bring to this site gets shot down fast. But I could
care less, you don't have to click that link up there ^^^. Enjoy.

Just bought Californication by RHCP. As usual with them, I
absolutely love it. It's got so many of their best songs like
Californication, Scar Tissue, Otherside, Around the World. God,
pure sex.

That wraps up their latter stuff, I can't wait to get their earlier
pre-John Frusciante stuff. Hillel Slovak had some serious talent,
and the stuff of Freaky Styley is just great.

And they have a new album coming out in the next couple months!
24 tracks! I'm seeing them live if they go on tour. I love
them.

yeeeeah.

Bought The best of the Wildhearts yesterday. Saw them at Rock In the Castle a few months back and never really took to them at the time sadly but now I have a chance to really listen to their stuff and not freeze my arse off on top off a Scarborough sea front, I think they are ace. I wanna go where the people go, greetings from s**tsville, geordie in wonderland...all ace anthemic stuff.

The new Ordinary Boys album "Brassbound" is pretty decent, and I'm glad I picked it up. Their last album, "Over the Counter Culture" was a good debut, particularly the intro/title track which was truly stand out. Sadly the new album doesn't quite have anything that can match that, but it still has its fair share of decent tracks.

Starting off with the title track, "Brassbound" is a fine intro song but nothing hugely noteworthy. A bit of a let down after the great "Over the Counter Culture", but you shouldn't let the first song define the album really. Their single "Boys will be Boys" follows, and is quite a throwback to the traditional British take on Ska - it's so comparable to Madness is almost hurts to be honest. It's a decent enough song but far from the best offered up on the album for me. "Life Will Be The Death Of Me" appeals far more to me, with a laid back ska beat and simple but catchy chorus, as does the next track "Thanks to the Girl", which finally lets off the ska style and settles into a more rocky style. My personal pick from the album - "On An Island" - is next up, and is such a fun, upbeat song that it really just makes you happy to listen to it. Made me think of one or two more recent Catch 22 songs to give an off the top of my head comparison. Of the remaining songs, "Skull & Bones" and "Don't Live Too Fast" are my favourites; the latter with quite a reggae/rasta style bringing back memories of Monkey Island which can never be a bad thing! The album, like the last one, has a cover song, this time in the form of "Rudi's in Love", which to be honest is just not my style. I vastly preferred the version of "Little Bitch" they did for the last album, which was one of the standout tracks for me, but "Rudi's in Love" is pretty much the low point this time around.

<span style="color: white;">I'm listening to Less Than Jake and The Impossibles a lot again. It's brought back fond memories of those days, back when The Impossibles were going to Austin High and doing shows that I was too young to go to (I was like 11 or 12) It's a shame their return-to-the-scene album The Return sucked so bad, I was looking forward to it when I heard they were getting back together. I'm going to spend my christmas gift certificate at the local record store on The Impossibles - Anthology (they damn well better have this CD being the Impossibles' home town!), The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails, and I'll probably pick something else up with the $2 I have left + a few bucks.

Shortly after figuring out MP3's are lame (cough bad play on words  ) I decided to encode all my CDs in OGG, the problem is that CDs don't last very well for six years. A few of the tracks from the three old CDs I have (coincidentally my favorites) have tracks with brief instances of silence, so I'm going to buy them again.

I also just found Seismic Anamoly (and magnatune.com) while searching for info on OGG. Seismic Anamoly is instrumental hard rock, which kicks quite a lot of ass as far as I'm concerned. Magnatune is the record label, which also kicks a sizable amount of ass. First is how you buy the music, you can choose to download an album in any of 5 formats (
</span>WAV, MP3, OGG, FLAC and AAC)<span style="color: white;"> for $8, or download it AND get a CD (via mail) with all the album art and stuff for $12.97. After that they allow you to LEGALLY copy the album and give it away 3 times. The website again is www.magnatune.com

I tried out a few songs, and I don't really know what to make of them  "Bottle Rocket" was the first one I heard, and I really enjoyed it. It's equal parts Beastie Boys and Jackson 5, which is a fun and uplifting combo! A few others like "The Wrath of Mikey" (you can listen on their website), "The Power Is On!", and "We Just Won't Be Defeated" also appealed to me, for goodness knows what reasons! I saw it is going cheap on play.com and in my local HMV, so I might give it a shot. It's so not my usual style, but to hell with it

I'm not a huge fan of The Rolling Stones, mainly because I've never really taken the time to listen to their stuff, but I listened to "Gimme Shelter" today for the first time and I have to say I really liked the song. It was definitely the one I liked the most. "Sympathy for the Devil" was also pretty good.

Any cultured Stones fans want to point me in the direction of a good CD to buy or songs to download on iTunes?

I also heard about this on the radio last run.

It seems that this guy came into possession of a s**tload of unreleased music preformed by, at that time, relatively unknown artists.

The site doesn't seem to be 56k friendly, so I cannot vouch for it but, its streaming music and supposed to be high quality.

Enjoy.

This is pretty nerdy, but I just bought the Command and Conquer
soundtrack off of the iTunes music store (22 songs for 10 dollars --
pretty cheap).

The composer, Frank Klapecki, is awesome. You probably wont enjoy
this soundtrack if you didn't spend hours playing the original command
and conquer as a kid, but if you did play C&C and remember the
music fondly then this is a great purchase.

As ever listening to Autechre (see avatar). Been listening to a lot of
cheesy hip hop recently - 50 Cent, Luniz, and another form of "black
music" - Reggae!

It's worth hearing some tracks off the album "Nile" by Patrice (german reggae artist, singing in English so don't worry).

Stand out song is "Soulstorm" for me.

My taste in music has widened tremendously in the past 4 years of my
life. I don't know exactly why, but I'm glad it has... because music
is such a lovely part of life its always good to have more of it around.

For some reason I feel like sharing my favorite bands of the moment.
Many of these fit smack dab in the middle of the emo and hip-hop
genres. Like ReNo said in the what ticks you off? thread, these two
types of music seem to draw the most flak from people but there's a lot
of great stuff that people don't give a chance.

Just reading off my audioscrobbler profile... here's my most played artist list:

Brand New, Alkaline Trio, Radiohead, Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday,
Led Zeppelin, Guster, Pete Yorn, Beatles, Interpol, Common, Modest
Mouse, Audioslave, Nirvana, Death Cab for Cutie, Gorillaz, Weezer,
Phish, Dane Cook, Virginia Coalition, Flaming Lips, Jack Johnson, Get
Up Kids, Dispatch, Good Charlotte (yes frenchy  , I think their older
stuff deserves way more credit than you give them), NOFX, Jimi Hendrix,
Sublime, Dashboard Confessional, Lagwagon, Nada Surf, The Who,
Coldplay, RHCP, Saves the Day, Clint Mansell, Less Than Jake, O.A.R.,
Miles Davis, Soundgarden, The Offspring, Piebald, Rise Against, Bob
Marley, Sugarcult, Punchline, Nas, Cream, Riddlin' Kids.

Whew, thats my top 50 most played list. I know some of those artists
aren't respected by pop culture right now, but that's what I like to
listen to.

ReNo, I don't know if I recommended Punchline to you before, but they have one or two songs I think you might like.

Woohoo, somebody else who thinks that Good Charlotte do have good tunes  They are by no means stellar song writers or musicians, but the first album in particular is just a fun pop punk outing and they do it fairly well. "Little Things" and "I Heard You" were two of my favourite tunes from the original Project Gotham Racing soundtrack (this was back before they were really famous), and from that I went out and bought the album and was pretty happy with it. "East Coast Anthem" and "Let Me Go" are decent examples of the genre, and while the album on a whole is perhaps a bit samey and repetitive, it's just easy to listen to and impulsive to sing along to. Their second album (think it's their second) "The Young and the Hopeless" I picked up on release and it also has some good tracks. I haven't tried any of the newer stuff by them, I think they have at least one or two other albums, but I may do at some point.

I've only heard two Punchline tunes before, one of which (Open Up) I particularly like and the other (Play) isn't quite as polished but is still enjoyable. You quite possibly did suggest them to me as I've no idea where else I heard them from  I'll have a hunt about and try to listen to more. Thanks for the reminder; had kinda forgotten about them

Meh, I'll keep my list short since... it's been a long time since I posted in here.

Haley Bonar - Wow, I think I love her. Really good folk singer in the style of Mary Lou Lord. GREAT stuff. Get -> Am I Allowed & Drinking Again

Mirah - Wow, I think I love her too, even though she's a lezbo and rather unattractive. Really good indie-folk singer. Get -> Dear Landlord & The Garden

The National - Kind of reminds me of Iron & Wine for some reason, but not nearly as boring. Get -> Fashion Coat & Slipping Husband.

Wilco - Took me a while to get into, but quite a few interesting tunes, especially on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Get -> Heavy Metal Drummer & Jesus, Etc.
And what's this I hear about good emo songs? I'll take suggestions.
One day you'll know what you're talking about, I can hardly imagine

@Hugh: Sheeesh I don't know where to start! I'll come back this
afternoon and give it a good thinking and get some picks for you to
try. I've only got a few minutes on my hands right now.

@ReNo: In terms of Punchline, you really need to listen to their song
"Stop" It is amazingly polished compared to their other
stuff. A lot of great parts to belt out in the car too.
Check out "Heart Transplant" I love the vocal stuff they do in this
song. The pulse of the guitar / beat of the song gets my head
bobbing all the time. At around 1:25 into the song it gets really
awesome. If you like what you hear then check out "I Don't Know",
"Here Goes Nothing", and "Weekends"

As for my favorite Good Charlotte songs... ReNo pretty much hit the
nail on the head (East Coast anthem and I Heard You are a couple of my
favorites). Here are a few more by them that I still like...
years after I first heard them: "Waldorf Worldwide", "Motivation
Proclamation", "Seasons", "Change", and "Thank You".

And now I'm late for class...!

/me caresses his poor, poor dial-up.

I'll tell you right now that I've heard and liked at least some of those, but I really really really do not consider Interpol, Modest Mouse, or Pete Yorn to be emo, Morphine. That's the craziest thing I've ever heard in my entire life. But now I just read you might have got carried away. Good 'ol selective reading. ;P Anyhoo... on to killing my connection.

Yeah -- I don't consider them emo by any stretch, but I couldn't resist
pitching them to you  Like you said, I just got carried away.

Also -- can I suggest a few more that I forgot (and a few to supplement ReNo's list)

"The Vines - Ms. Jackson"

"Dashboard Confessional - Standard Lines"

"The Get Up Kids - I'll Catch You"

<span style="color: gray;">Adam Sandler - What's Your Name (Album)
Adam Sandler - Shh....Don't Tell (album)
Nine Inch Nails - Halo 2 - Pretty Hate Machine (Album)

Been listening to those 3 albums. They kick so much ass. The What's Your Name album by Sandler has some of his best songs...really good stuff...and his last album, Shh....Don't Tell is prolly his best work to date. Pretty Hate MAchine is just awesome rock music. I reccommend all of it. You know who you are

I've been on a Weezer kick the past week or so. These two CD have been playing non-stop in my car:

"The Blue Album"

"Pinkerton"

Get both if you think you may even remotely like Weezer.

Weezer never did it for me. I'm in my System of a Down phase now. And for singles:

Tom Sawyer - Rush

Sweet City Woman - Stampeders

Awesome songs.

The popularity of System of a Down is kind of a mystery to me. I
like the little melodic / quiet bits of their songs, where the singer
actually sings and I really
dislike all the screaming. I can take a little screaming now and
then... but in general its just a huge musical turn off for me.

SOAD songs also seem to be quite ADD.

I'd like to touch mine alright. With a big stick. Preferably a 2x4.
I've almost come to the decision that if it weren't for text, 56k would be completely outdated. The day someone posts oversized text downloads, I think I really will cry.

I recently "acquired" some rammstein songs from a freind after he'd been bothering me to listen to it. I must say even though I have absolutely no clue what they're saying its sounds pretty good.
