I suppose there's little argument against saying Nintendo is the most innovative console hardware developer, but innovative game maker? In the face of fifteen years of endlessly rehashed franchises, many of which peaked on the SNES? No way!

No! They have all the new games like... Zelda... and Metroid, Super Mario...

OK, you have a point. But especially some of the Mario titles, like Mario 64 which did 3D platforming like no game ever before or Mario Galaxy which has a portalesque quality to it are outstanding exceptions.

Sony and MS do not develop games at all (they buy and enslave game companies, yes, but compared to Nintendo, all they do is produce hardware).

And yes, I am a Nintendo fanboy.

So Otzman, you picked up Cabal yet? Let me know your name if you're on the Jupiter server... it's hella fun really:)
Yep, started playing earlier today! I'm on the Jupiter server, and my characters name is Reginia (oh yes I had to pick a female character so that I could zoom in on various areas :sailor: ).

I'm a Blader, and so far I'm on level 11. I'm just about to do the first promotion test. I gotta eat something first thoug (in real life).

Blister, you posted your nick in another thread, right? I'll have a look and add you next time I play (later tonight probably).

I never understood Mario 64. I know its considered groundbreaking and revolutionary, but I thought it was terrible and played Pilotwings 64 a whole lot more. The platforming was never fun and it felt like I spent more time wranging with the camera than I did playing the game. I only had fun in the first few worlds and then the game just became painful. How did I miss its greatness by such a huge margin? (and I was still a bright eyed kid not this bitter husk of a man so don't say that!)

I don't know what everyone else saw in the game, which sucks, because clearly it is viewed as a legendary game, to the point where it probably had deep influences within large swaths of the game industry... which is probably why I dislike most games released today :/

I wasn't the biggest fan of Mario 64 when it came out, but as I look at it now, it actually is quite a good game. I don't think it's quite as good as the majority of people say it is, though.

I liked it, especially after learning the side somersault.

No N64 game quite impressed me as much as Goldeneye, though. They packed so many ideas on a 16 MB (!) cartridge. If I don't count the HL mods, then no other game ever offered so many hours of gameplay without getting boring.

I never owned a console after the N64 so, again, I might be biased/ignorant towards newer consoles and games here. (Although I doubt there's much competition)

We rented Cooking Mama: Cook-Off for the Wii at my friend's New Years Party. It's a fantastic party rental. Not a very deep game though.

Metroid, where to start, I think that game is terrible. Some chick in a space suit who can roll up into a ball.... I really hope for you guys sake you never ever buy, see, hear, touch, taste or even smell the Metroid Ds game, that game stresses me out when ever I see it or hear about it, its terrible. I dont even want talk about the single player for that game, seriously, and the multiplayer is so unbalanced, and when you play on wifi, most people quit if there about to loose, its impossible to get any experience.

Zelda is not to bad, some Mario games are ok i suppose, Goldeneye was a great game for the N64, took me so long to unlock all the campaign levels (Aztec, Egyptian omg) And all the fun glitches, I wish I had a gameshark

Hell yeah, I was logged in on Cabal while I was at work, and I managed to sell 8 white socks for 10k each :dorky: !

Blister, have to gotten any nice presents from the socks? I'm not level 50 yet so I haven't got a transmuter and hence I cannot create any other socks. I'm starting to understand why people get all stuck in MMORPG games ... but ... it will never happen to me .. I think.

Always when you think it gets to be boring, you achieve something new that peaks your interest again.

I'm a level 50 Force Blader but i sell all my socks, you get better money from them than the presents. 10k is way too cheap though, at one point i was selling white socks for 100k, nowadays 60k. But mostly i have too many white socks to sell them in one go, so i make a few green socks and sell them for 230k. I'll be online tonight, i'll be on the lookout for ya... i'm NoxSlayer btw.

Last stage? I had all the weapons and no vacancy for new people by the fifth from last.

The chainsaw is NASTY. And all the ones that run right up to the wall don't actually damage it for a few seconds... long enough to reload any of the guns but the 357.

Half Life - Classic, I enjoyed it, even if I played it over a million times.

Half Life 2 - I love how you're given a freedom to interact with the world physic.

Contra (NES) - Hehe, still fun, I played it since when I was five year olds.

Medieval Total War - Who doesn't like taking over the continent through strategy, tactic, and brutal betrayal and wars? I enjoy grabbing my army of 20k mens and stomp every armies that dare get in my way.

Jedi Knight Jedi Academy - I enjoy the duel, I think I'll enjoy the massive jedi force combined with saber even more! I had fun playing singleplayer alone because I was given a freedom to slice the stormtroopers or the siths into pieces.

Sudden Strike Series - Probably one of my favorite RTT games of all time. Requires patience, strategy, and skills to complete certain objectives of the missions.

Amen (You mean Medieval2 right?). If you get bored of the same old Europe map, there are tons of free mods for M2TW with different maps, other factions, etc.

I liked the shotgun in The Last Stand, shooting 2 shells a second and watching the shots hit their faces. The gory sound effects too.

I got Unreal Tournament 2004 yesterday and Deus Ex today ordered from Amazon. I seem to have a habit of ordering more than 1 game at a time. UT 2004 seems alright but I think it only seems enjoyable right now because it's new to me (although I have the original UT and Unreal 2: The awakening). The vehicles seem to be the only real improvement.

Level 50, nice  . I suppose I'm practically giving my socks away then  , gotta start sell them for a little more then. I sold a map part, can't remember which one it was, you had to be level 75 to do use it or whatever, not really sure about what map parts are tbh. Anyway, I managed to sell it for 310k, and I got it out of one of the white socks. Still I might earn more just selling the socks for 60k each...

I've been experiencing pretty bad graphical errors from time to time. I posted a video on youtube in an attempt to get help lnky, read the comment for more info on that. Basically things looks very strange as you can see in the vid, but right now the game seems to be working again. Hopefully I'll get more new dvd-rom tomorrow so I can reinstall Windows as my old one's all broken. Might even buy new parts for my computer soon.
I'm so tired today I think I'll hit my bed right away, so no gaming for me tonight unfortunately. But I'll prolly play some this weekend, and I'll PM you my msn can we talk more there Blister, I'll log in now and see if you're online in Cabal. You're mostly on Jupiter, Channel 1, right?

I've been playing Portal ... it's really fun and great and everything ... but it's way too easy and short. (Achievements and all)

Can someone explain the "Companion Cube" love to me? Before I played the game, I assumed, at the very least, the cube was predominantly in the game ... but you get it for a collective 2 to 5 minutes or so.

So, I don't understand how it's so loved when it's barely in the game.

Otz, you probably need to clean your graphics card. That's a type of artifacting (there are many, look here).

Crono, I think the whole effect got spoiled because you expected so much of that cube. I knew just enough about the companion cube to be happy to finally see it, and to wonder what it actually did.

Anyway, I haven't been playing much AAA games lately. I've turned indie/casual instead. I've recently played An Untitled Story, a 2D exploration/action platformer. Pretty good game. Doukutsu, or Cave Story, is another excellent platformer. Knytt Stories, same story. Heh. I'm now playing Lyle in Cube Sector, a bit of an odd game but quite fun despite it's deliberately oldskool graphics and sound.

And every now and then I play Mono, Echoes and Warning Forever for my shooter kick.

Anyone else here who's playing indie games nowadays? What are your favorites?

That isn't what happened. It wasn't like I had expectations and then they were dashed. I had no expectations, I had only heard of it and that people adored it.

Even if I knew nothing of the object before playing the game I would still see it as a rather insignificant thing. That's why I was asking.

Maybe I went through the game too fast?

Companion cube was a funny joke during the game (if you hadn't heard about it before), especially given that the writers of Portal were the Old Man Murray people who are most remembered for making fun of the lameness of cratefests in every fps/custom map/etc.

Then of course the worthless 'gaming community' and the internet at large got a hold of it, killed it, buried it, pissed on its grave, dug it up and repeated it ad nauseam.

Don't laugh.

I finally got Quake 4 and am playing through it right now.

I read through all the old Quake 4 threads, and no one seemed to notice that the level design has a lot of similarities to the original Half-Life.

I mean, the Dispersal Facilities is very similar to Residual Proceeding, and the subsequent Recomposition Center is almost identical to the second part of Residual Proceeding (with the conveyor belts and traps).

See for yourself.

Was that an intentional homage to Half-Life, or was it an unintentional "borrowing"?

At least two Half-Life community mappers (KFS and Ken20Banks) worked on Quake 4 as level designers. That probably had something to do with it, but also Raven is a pretty terrible developer, so if anything the similarities to HL1 and 2 were very intentional in a "HL did this we need to copy it" sort of way.

And it is not only the level design that is similar to HL, believe me. Plus the basic structure to the game is almost totally identical to another Raven FPS, Jedi Outcast.

Such a bad game :/

Way more fun than I thought it would be, I think it's fairly balanced, neither side has it easy. Somewhat stressful game.

Battlefield 2
More fun than I remember it being. I finally got the hang of flying the jets with a mouse, but damn there are some good pilots out there. On some servers I hop in a jet and I've got missile lock warnings every 3 seconds without ever even seeing the other plane.

I recently gave Deus Ex a second chance. I didn't really like it when it was released and chalked up everyone else loving it to one of those things I just didn't get. I just finished it and boy was I missing out, since it was awesome. Course it's a much better rpg than a fps, which is probably why I didn't like it in the first place since I expected a fps with rpg elements instead of the other way around.

I finished Deus Ex about 2 weeks ago. I thought the flexibility of the storyline was quite interesting. It's a pity you have to make a political decision at the end though.

You can get unlimited skill points in the Vandenberg Air Base mission with an exploit.

Also enter "Deus Ex" into the YouTube search, you'll find some funny videos there like messing with AI, gunther vs bot, hobo fun 1 (git back in yor cage!), Denton owns pathetic thug and Walton's brain crashes.

I've recently been playing Star Control 2: The Urquan Masters. It's an old game, and some of the graphics are rather primitive, but the game itself is rather fun, and its got a very good storyline.

Nothing note worthy have I recently played but, I am really looking forward to Fallout 3's releasing.

I didget Warlords for Xmas for Civ 4. I always wanted to know how/why the barbarians whipped my ass so easily. With Warlords you can be the barbarians and they do whip ass. I never lose. Never even come close to losing. Now I wonder how/why I win playing against them. They are given so many advantages its incredible.

Anybody else pick up Trials 2 on Steam?

For those who haven't heard of it, it's a great little Trial Biking game. Its got 3D graphics (which look great for what they are) but the gameplay all plays out on a 2D plane. You've only 4 buttons - Accelerate, Brake, Lean Forward, Lean Back - and with those you need to try and navigate your way through over 50 obstacle courses.

Its hugely addictive; with its checkpointing system and instant retry its really easy to say "just one more try" and see an hour of your life disappear before you. It's our new lunch time game in the office, with 8 of us now having bought it and all joining an in-game "team" to compete against each other's times and help push Team Outerlight up the scoreboard.

If anybody else has it, add me as a friend on Steam - always nice to have more times to try and beat

Playing Mass Effect for the PC right now. I wasn't sure whether I like RPG games, but apparently I do.

Finally got my hands on Counter-Strike source. I liked the levels (both remakes and the new maps), but what happened to fastline from Counter-Strike Condition Zero  ? Also I thought it was far to easy to get head shots, and the bots are much more fun to verse now that they are more like a human player than previously.

I've started playing System Shock 2 but I'm already stuck in an area  .

And I have almost finished my Gears of War Hardcore play though.

Braid on Xbox Live Arcade is awesome. Odd little puzzle platformer that'll wrack your brain on a good few occasions, and yet you'll always figure it out eventually. It isn't anything fantastically new as such, playing as a straightforward 2d platformer with not-all-that-uncommon-these-days "time reversal abilities". But its the way that the game makes you use your time control, and how it mixes things up in each world with little quirks or extra abilities, and how they are all incorporated in a whole load of puzzles that are each unique, that makes it special. The artistic, painterly style and pretentious yet really quite thought provoking story are icing on the cake. I completed the game in a single 5 hour sitting essentially, and it was time enjoyed and well spent. I thoroughly recommend it to anybody who likes a slower paced, more thoughtful game once in a while.

Oh and Geometry Wars 2 is, as those of you who played Geometry Wars 1 will know, fucking ace. With Bionic Commando and Castle Crashers rounding out this month's XBLA releases, it's turning into an awesome yet expensive month to be an Xbox owner!
