Terms and conditions?! What? Do they want my first-born as well?! Let me know the IP and I'll put up a wee box on the front page somewhere with the details, and a page here about it.

I know it sounds simple, but it comes up sometimes. I ran one of the biggest HLDM clans for 3 years, believe me. "I can't seem to locate the server PLEASE HELP!"
To find a certain server is simple people. Load HL2DM in Half-Life. Click on the favorites tab and enter the IP address. After that if you did it correctly, the server stats will show up in the window. Click on it and join if there are any empty slots. At that point, if there is a password it will ask for confirmation.
Easy as that.

If we could get some server script to pump out details on the server
(current map, # of players, time left, etc...) onto some part of the
snarkpit webpage it would be excellent

AKA how to imply sv_download url...the motd.txt.....how to implement a banner.gif for content server pic....and that sort of stuff?
edit:
I ran my own listen server for HL1 for a few months...but with hl2 I would like to take it a step further...thats all

Plus I thought this was for all the snarkpit maps, you should take the valve maps either out of the rotation.

Its only just up people, I imagine it will take Gwil a bit of time to
get a custom map rotation going, get a map pack put together, and
officially "open" the server. I'm sure the password will be given out
plenty soon enough

The password is currently up in the IRC room, but if Gwil gives the OK I'll put it on the front page/control panel.

All i have to say is "DrGlass killed Gwil with stunstick"
thats really fun! I cant wait to play the custom maps. Even with
a ping of 100-150 I was able to play just fine. Super job gwil

More updates -
The reason the password stands at the moment is it's part of the
T&C to keep it on, and I'm unsure about the "legality" of handing
it out en mass (eg via this website). We have some "organised" games
going from IRC like Leperous says, and have had some fun blasts so far.
I'm looking into upgrading the server so it is unpassworded, but also
so we can have a password system for organised matches/gaming
sessions/playtests.

HL2 only im afraid. Multiple mod support was more or less double the
price, so I chose HL2DM as that's primarily what this site is focused
on

Not trying to burst andyone's bubble, but last time we did something like this (for HL1) didn't you guys not hook your server up with .res files?
I think I'll join a game sometime  Nice job Gwil/Lep.

Are you/ can you/ have you set up an sv_download_url so that downloads
can go faster so less time is spent downloading and more time playing?
I pinged around 100 but I didnt even really notice the ping that much the gameplay was rather smooth.

Well the idea is people will just come and grab the custom map packs
off the page when they are available  As it stands it's only island17
that's a custom map on there, at the moment.

EDITI was just on, I'm in Ontario, Kanata and I was at about 150. Better than other servers. Shame I got rocked. It was my first time though so I'm proud of myself.

Well, that was fun. I know im resurrecting an older thread, but since
everyone used the [Snarkpit] tag, how about turning this clan into
something serious; maybe even adding a clan subsite (pit) ?

Just been there and player for about... what was it? an hour or so?
Anyway, it's crowded but fun.
And well, I'm just using this [Snarkpit] tag now since everyone else
did it too... how about a mapper group tag instead of a clan?

Gwil started the tag, and I though it looked cool, so I just added it,
theres no real reason to put a tag on your name, just something that
says your from the snarkpit.

Just played there, and it was a lot of fun. Too bad HL2DM had to crash on me...
I remember that in HL1 someone came up with a perl script that
harvested the log info, translated it into stats, and sent it to a HTTP
server. If you can't find a admin mod with stats, I think that
this would be almost as easy.

The rotation is now:
dm_torque (Custom)
dm_lockdown
dm_island17 (Custom)
dm_overwatch
dm_morbid (Custom)
dm_steamlab
To be added:
dm_pinnacles
Other suggestions are welcome!

I would suggest Hydro, but it might just kill the server.
Hurry up Morbid and frickin' download already, the excitement is killing me, I can't wait to see how bad my ping is  .

Nice rotation so far, and with Hydro and Rebar it would be a little
better still  With 16 people some of the more open maps are a bit
laggy (overwatch and island17 were the worst offenders) but still
playable. Congratulations must go to Yak for making such a good job of
Torque as well, it was great fun with around 8 people, and should be a
good TDM map in addition to a good DM map. I would kill for server
info/stats on the webpage, particularly if you could somehow link steam
ID up with user profiles to provide a nice integrated stats system

However all kudos for this server must go to Gwil, not me!

200 ping in california....eek
Dm_swamplight should be finished this weekend. All beta versions have gotten good response from players (you'll find it rotating on some server, most times). The map is a good size for almost any group, also. Would love to see it in rotation.

350ish ping for me. It's not a good ping, but it is tolerable.
Rabid's dm_petrol perhaps? This has inspired me to begin working on Exodus again, and hopefully it could get on the cycle. :o
My only concern about this server is that there might end up being too much maps. I say we get rid of the official maps and have only custom maps. Even then, good maps will continue to come out, and it will reach the point where there are too many maps. We need some kind of vote thing for the best maps to stay in.
I would also like to know whether this server will be used to playtest peoples maps. Chuck the map onto the server for a while so the mapper can get some feedback on gameplay. Will it be used like this?

I can't see that working too well. Who will moderate it? If the server is full of people, do we just boot em, so john-doe can look at his map? Who has rcon?
Seems to me, the easiest thing would be to keep the rotation solid, fairly small, and consistent. Maybe rotate the good custom maps in and out, on weekly cycles, but keep the maplist short. Or, pick a group of maps that we have deemed acceptable, have a fairly large rotation, and create a map-pack of those maps, downloadable here. Then, every couple of months, swap some custom maps with new content and create current maplist download.
Maybe we need Juim to give advice - he's had some good experience running servers.
