I think I'll be leaving.

I spent most of my days for a few years on this site posting every time I could get a chance. Now, I'm one of the oldest users here. The oldies have dropped off, and I feel out of place. I feel that I am a person who always wishes for days past and on the net it's the same thing...

I'm starting to withdraw from the internet and it's weird. The places i go are places I don't like and I only go there because I need the company. This is a place I like. I'm leaving before it is sullied in my mind.

I think I'll stop mapping. Even though I like it, it's frustrating to never finish one...

I've left my sector in the world represented by Fatstrings. He's a talented new mapper and he has a lot to offer. I'll be back someday and every once in a while I'll stop in to say hi.

Snarkpit: you've given me a lot throughout the years I've been here and I hope I have helped some people along the way. God bless you guys.
I tried sniffing coke, but the ice cubes kept getting stuck in my nose.

Sad news indeed - but definately a dilemma many of us who aren't the
pros (so to speak) face. With all the PC's you have, I guess IRC will
always be there for a chat?

edit! - i thought i was one for taking the pulse of communities... seems I am usurped!

Always sad to see someone leave. Althought I'm not overly active here, it's one of the few sites (probably the only) I've visited regularly for such a long time.

It's funny that you mention how you're one of the oldest users, because I still think of you as "one of the new guys" together with all the others that joined around the release of HL2 (you did join around this time, right?).

Best of luck with whatever you choose to do mate.

No. I joined at the ANTICIPATED release of HL2. Which was about 1.5 years before it actually happened.

idd. Well, not very new ofcourse. There have been a lot of big debates involving you i remember

Anyway, there are actually still a lot of users posting with a member number below 1000, so i don't really understand why you feel out of place.

But it's your decision and i'm sure it's founded. gl in all future endeavours, and i'm sure we'll see you again.

Sad to see you go Nickel  Like most of us here, I've had a fair few disagreements with you since you arrived, but you're a genuinely nice guy and have been an asset to the community over the years. You'll be missed.

Did you ever finish that muscle car of yours by the way?

Although I haven't seen you around for a while, this is coming as a surprise. "Nickelplate"... in the time I've spent here, that name has always been such a central part of this community for me, it's weird to see you go.

I'm glad you consider still dropping by from time to time, Nickel. It's so sad when people say that they'll never come back again.

Bye, and good luck with whatever you plan for your future!

I remember Nickel's first avatar of the G-man and I always used to think that Nickel looked like the G-man because I associated him with that avatar and signature

cusses in many ways because I lost a grand farewell speech

Nickel, I will post more later after I cool off from losing so much text. To make a long post short- You have been gone even when you've been here of late so you posting a farewell is a bit moot.

Me being the last person to say anything, because I have went away and returned even more than a bad penny.

Soon however, we will all type www.snarkpit.net and it will be gone anyway so your saying goodbye is only a pre-emptive one for all of us.

Stay or leave. I still have your phone number. Perhaps you will ride with me this summer and we can visit the Grand Canyon or something.

What I know, or do not know is subjective. What I see is another matter. Anyone here has the same observational opportunities as myself and can extrapolate the same end results as myself.

I have been here almost since the beginning. Snarkpit determined its own longevity by restricting itself to one game. The only way Snarkpit will burst its boundaries is to somehow expand to another, or many other popular games.

I would even go so far as to say that if we included consoles that we might survive another year.

Without some serious intervention from the power in charge, Snarkpit will die. It won't die slowly, it will die all at once.

Right this moment, the power making the decision has zero motivation to extend our future. Other than that, I have nothing to say. Its not my place.

The best things in life, aren't things.

Orph, you make it sound like the site is going to disappear over night. Unless Lep stops paying for the server, or fix it in case of a crash, I don't see how the Snarkpit is going to die "all at once". Sure it will die, everything does, but it'll be slowly. This site could be about making breakfast for all I care, I'd come here nonetheless... and my breakfast making skillz suck, so I'd probably hang around even more.

Really? I've been gone nearly 2 weeks. The post count measures in a few dozen.

By my figuring, its nearly dead. God, I hate to say this but unless we are squabbling about something inane, the post counts are almost always low.

Anywho, I will be here till the doors close in one form or another so... shrugs

I had one of the last posts at PFL. It was something inane there too. In the end, it died and its popularity rivaled SP at their respective heights.

Re-read what I typed. Mark me. If we do not expand beyond HL AND do so in some positive way, Snarkpit will die.

That's my prediction. Whether Lep allows the host to go unpaid or not, Snarkpit will die, and IMO, the fact that we already show undeniable signs of it makes me think it will happen fast/soon.

The best things in life, aren't things.

I'm not saying that Snarkpit won't die, I'm just saying I don't think it'll die that suddenly, or that soon either. I suppose soon is a relative term, but I think snarkpit will still be around for at least one more year.

I agree, I think that if the Snarkpit doesn't expand it will fade away, but as far as the post count the past couple of weeks goes, I think it is just a slow time right now. What's not to say that its slow because mappers are more busy spending their time mapping rather than posting. I know I am.

You could argue the few posts we are getting are from the active people, and if the active people are the ones not posting enough topics or maps, then who else will care what the non-active/new people have to post?

Well, I say this: Whether its a slow-going time for either crowd (i.e. active or not; old or new), The devotion, intention, and ambition is still there. Maby the next big 150+ post count topic is on it's way next month, giving us all reasons to check out the Snarkpit yet again to entertain ourselves and others. All I'm saying is that I don't believe the few post counts over the past few weeks are a sign to worry. If anything, you wouldn't care if the Snarkpit ended because you would have left it already. So as long as you and I and everyone else that still wants to see the Snarkpit stay here (as well as for Lep paying for it), it'll live on!

P.S. Sorry to take away from this thread's topic, perhaps we should start a new one, but I think its kind of related to begin with. Sorry to see ya go Nickelplate

i'm quite sure that if all the time that's gone into writing threads about the impending demise of the snarkpit had gone towards mapping, or learning aspects of the new engine, there would be no self-fulfilling prophesy to worry about.

God, if it were only as easy as saying "Ignore it, it won't hurt as much."

For my part I would rather one of two things happen. Either we expand beyond HL or the site closes up for good.

Picking at scabs has about run out of the old thrill factor. TBH, it took almost 2.5 years for PFL to finally degrade to a point where its now unusable. BUT, all that time people kept thinking positively, in spite of the ever increasing instability of the pages.

Snarkpit has a bit more life only because Unseth waited till the last month before delegating any authority. Snarkpit has had some authority all its life but sadly, the centralization that Unseth did, is also shared by Lep.

Eventually it will determine the outcome.

Anywho...

The funny thing about self fulfilling prophesies is, they always come true, in spite of anyones desire to the contrary. If this is self imposed, I'd hate to think what I could accomplish if it was something I wanted to happen.

If this site doesn't expand, AND it remains alive, it will be as good as dead.
Personally, I am tired of HL. Not dead tired, but tired none the less.

The best things in life, aren't things.

For my part I would rather one of two things happen. Either we expand beyond HL or the site closes up for good.
NOOO! Do you know how often i use this site to answer my hammer questions.

I dont really know who the hell you are, but I'm sad your leaving. Hope to see ya on this site soon:)

Oh and while I was lightly skimming the content of this thread I heard somthing about the snarkpit closeing. IT BETTER NOT!!!!!!! I will support snarkpit till the very end. Just like halo

Good luck nickelplate,

aaron.
edit: OMG, I was reading this page offline and I had to reconect to the internet to say this. New people do not come here to have a chat, they come here because they are new to mapping or have a problem. I must say that I had a few problems with my maps (reddawn) and I dont know if this is still there but I started a new thread in the half-life1 problem seaction and it said that I must search for the problem before I can start a post. Thats when I thought screw this, I'm going to twhl. And thats what I do. Most of the time I need help with mapping, I go to twhl.

"i'm quite sure that if all the time that's gone into writing threads about the impending demise of the snarkpit had gone towards mapping, or learning aspects of the new engine, there would be no self-fulfilling prophesy to worry about." This is what fishy said an I agree with it.

I think that this site needs to be more user freindly to the newbies. Its needs more tuts and more people that are willing to help out the newbies, because they are the people who become super pros than a few years down the track, they help out the newbies, then those newbies grow and so on. I know that I am fairly new to the site and lots of people hate me, but one day I will have lots of respect and I will be helping people and know this site like the back of my hand and most of you people on now will not be on anymore. Than one day it sounds crazy to me but I will get board and discover more imprtant things and than leave. But that wont be for ages. I still use thae half-life 1 engine. I'm living in the past.

There is no need to include more games support and support consoles. The diffrent people would clash and it will get messy. However I wouln'd mind if you supported halo1 pc modding because I recently download the hek kit and will make some nice maps for halo  . All you people need to worry about is having a good time on snarkpit, and talking about half-life and modding, and stuff you can do with the engines and be cool  .

The snarkpit wont close, dont make me lugh, however we need to attract the noobs and help them. Then they will be stuck to snarkpit. I know that there is alot of stuff that is so annoying about this site that will make it alot better.

I will add though, I dared a freind to go onto www.bungie.net and say that half-life2 and gears of war where better than the 3 halo's combined. And within about what was it 5 minutes?, there where more than 200 replys of angry halo nuts like me
If that was all messy than I am sorry. I am watching saw II at the moment and I just saw the bit about the guy getting burnt, and I am home alone becuase my brother is at a sleepover and my mum is on a date. Ooh la la. Also I will not re-read it because there to much stuff to read. Have a nice day. Just reflecting on what I wrote, its so messy:)

if you can't put the smallest amount of effort into looking through the editing section to see if your question has already been answered then there's no reason to bother helping you, and you have no business demanding the 'super pros' help you either.

yeah I didn't really read anything anyone else said, but you're not going anywhere... I've been trying to 'leave' for 5 years, but I keep coming back every now and then. Hell, I think everyone has lost track of how many times Orpheus has already 'left'... I won't even get started with Cassius...

I cant stop visiting this site from one time to another ... Its just...WEIRD !!!

I think SnarkPit has injected us with a rare fluid-like phenomenon that will attract you closer to this site, this is used by integrating Physic's LawOfMotion and Dalton'sTheory to accomplish such a thing, when an electron passes through the ionic charge expanding the attraction forces to a 105 degree angle, this means the polarity between the 2 atoms are Stronger, or sometimes Weaker...Thus leading to the increase of attracted particles to your Monitor and the Manipulation of your brain to type down www.snarkpit.net ...
This is all true...and one day, you will agree that this theory is TRUE...

Dont blame me, all what I said came out from nowhere ...

Where are the SP servers? We can use that and a frappr to calculate each member's individual attraction to the Snarkpit!
Also change the texture of the dock. Docks are rarely tile. -Facepunch
