Just got back from The Grudge... I'm not really too sure what to say on it. I enjoyed the movie overall, as it had a pretty well developed theme going on and used some interesting story telling techniques to elaborate some things. I wouldn't really say it was "scary," as such, but it certainly had a pretty solid creepy theme going for it.
Also, some of the "scare tactics" worked pretty well, and some of the sound effects were pretty solid. The whole cat noise thing they had going on was an interesting twist.
One thing that I wish they would have done more with were reflections. In most of the scenes, SOMETHING was reflecting an image. For the most part, however, nothing ever comes of it (there are a few instances where something will show up, but not nearly enough to justify the sheer amount of reflective surfaces. And when it DOES show up, it's fairly obvious.) I think they should have at least done some relatively simple overlay image tricks to give the impression that something may have been in the reflection, but not necessarily hammer on the point. The movie could have used a few more subtle scare moments, IMO.
Oh, and in case anyone cares, there was an add for "Tw0", a sequel to "The Ring." I think it'll be crap, since I really didn't enjoy the first one much at all. Just something to think about.

I saw Saw last Friday.
I suppose, it would be safe to say, the trailers are misleading, but I don't know what was cut out of the movie (the rating was changed). I liked the movie overall, but some of the acting is not that great. The people who you'd think are good actors give under par performances, but I suppose it goes along with the character they're playing and with what James Wan wanted.
I don't think most people would enjoy the movie though. I know the people I went to it with were way too excited to see it, so they thought it was terrible and trash.
I don't understand why people hype themselves up for movies all the time, if you do that of course you're going to hate the movie. The only movie I've ever seen that actually lived up to hype was Fight Club.
See Saw if you really want to see it, but push your expectations down, it's a good movie, but not spectacular, more or less slightly above average overall.

Personally, i like the oldies. Today's films all follow a certain pattern, especially american films - tragic hero, evil bad-guy that stole something/keeps someone hostage, sexy bimbo (that the hero will inevitably make sex with >>>), a sex scene, a battle, the final battle, the hero's reward. I've seen countless movies following this pattern.
Kelly's Heroes, starring Clint Eastwood. 1976 (i think). One of the best war-comedies ever made.

I saw Team America recently. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't particularly funny either. Maybe if i was 14 again hearing puppets call each other dicks and assholes would be humorous...

I loved the first half of Fear and Loathing, but I just found the second part really disturbing, kinda like From Dusk Till Dawn. The first half was disturbingly brutal, but the second half was great!
Here are some really good movies that I either watched for the first time this year or watched ages ago and just remembered them.
Spriggan
Desperado
Boondock Saints
City of Industry
National Lampoons: Loaded Weapon
Hot Shots 1 and 2
Seven
Clay Pigeons
Way of the Gun
Three Amigo's
Transformers: The Movie
Snatch
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrells
Naked Weapon 1, 2 1/2, 3 1/3.
The list goes on, here are the ones I rembered of the top of my head. Enjoy  .

Anyone who's ever made a map or a 3D virtual environment would appreciate the rendering details of "The Incredibles". I went to the Pixar site, and it's amazing that even with their supercomputer occupying the entire floor space, it still takes them six hours on the average to render a single frame.
But looking at the final result in the movie, it's no wonder that much processing power is necessary to generate these scenes. Pay special attention to the character's hair. Each strand is visible, and even the texture (i.e. how much natural oil it has, whether it was freshly shampooed) is illustrated nicely. I was just gasping non-stop when I was mesmerized by the details.
Half-Life 2's graphics pales in comparison to the beauty of this movie.
Kudos to Pixar.
P.S. A bonus to watching the movie was the trailer for Star Wars Episode III. I saw it on big screen for the first time while watching "The Incredibles".

Let the thread live, it serves a purpose. It's not like a topic just
dragged randomly up from the past (eg the story thread below this), it
still has useful info in and can have info added to it.
It has a purpose, more than anything.
As for films - I recently watched Halloween 5, and that's all. It was fairly run of the muill Mike Myers stuff.
Myers blows up, still walks
Myers gets shot, still walks.
Myers kills folk
Myers gets arrested
Myers gets blown out of jail
the end.
fairly crap, all in all.

I saw Eternal
Sunshine of the Spotless Mind last friday, and I really liked it.
In the first 15 minutes, I feared it was going to be another romantic
drama/comedy packed with clich?s, (Guy walking on beach. Meets
girl. They stare at eachother. It's teh l0ve m4chine !) but the film just
got better every minute.
The erasing-memory aspect and the flashbacks
- a bit like in Vanilla Sky - were well implemented, and the
music was great too (Especially the filtered version of Beck's 'Everybody's
got to learn sometimes' ). Good movie, after all.

National Treasure wasn't too terrible, if you just ignore the story. I went in with some incredibly low expectations, though. I was expecting it to be this huge mishmash of poorly thrown together events and whatnot, but it actually had a decent plot.
Not worth 8 bucks, I'd say, but it's a fairly decent adventure style movie, and those don't come around too often these days.

Some good moments, but imho the other dodgeball coach (the "good guy") is terrible in that film, not once does he act convincingly and this ruined things (even though I'm not a film critic and it doesn't take much to please me!)

the only movie EVER where Nicholas Cage is dun dun dun ACTING!)
What about Matchstick Men? I thought he did a pretty good job in that.
He was OKAY. I didn't really like that movie and that surprised me because (past Thelma & Louise) I liked most of Scott's films.
The only part I like was the end.
I've noticed Nicholas Cage is only remotly good when he plays someone with many many problems (Bringing out the Dead, Adaptation, Matchstick Men) the one exception I can think of off the top of my head is Face Off ... Jesus, what a terrible movie.
Monqui, You mean like in Alexander ... that terrible piece of dog s**t. I can't believe that movie was made by Oliver Stone. I have the same issue when it comes to The Lost World: I can't believe it was Speilberg's.
I don't plan on ever seeing National Treasure by the way. The only inclination of me seeing that movie would be Sean Bean.

San Diego, actually (why do I remember that).
I just don't understand how they got that story though ... the only correlation the movie has with the book is: there are dinosaurs, an island, some of the same character names, and the title, "The Lost World". The book was f**king awesome though, way better then Jurassic Park.
The only part I liked about the film was up to when In-gen started hunting the T-Rex (and a lot of the filler before that point). The only reason why is that's the only stuff in the movie that even remotely reminds me of the book (which is awesome, read it, now).
Oh and the paleontologist from the Sega-CD version of Jurassic Park was in the movie and was terrible. Not to mention, it'd be moronically stupid to run away from a snake into a T-Rex. (Not that they were hunters, as to the last I've heard. I heard something that they found evidence that T-Rex's were pack-scavengers or something.)

I don't think I'll be seeing National Treaure anytime soon either. It looks like a mish mash of various adventure flicks. If I want to watch a first rate adventure movie I'll put on Indiana Jones: The Raiders of the Lost Ark.
God, what an awesome movie... Written and Directed by George Lucas, starring Harrison Ford, set in exotic locations around the world, awesome effects, scenery and music, boobie traps, and the killing of numerous damned dirty nazi's... what more could you want in a movie. Oh, and the whip and hat too. :kitty:
