I was explaining to someone where I came up with my online name, and it made me wonder why other people chose their names.

Here's how I got my name:

I'm not addicted to any
drugs, nor have I been. Roughly five years ago I was in the hospital
for surgery and when I came out I wouldn't stop bleeding so they had to
give me morphine, which did the trick. All I really remember was the
feeling that I was floating a few inches above my bed. It was pretty
cool.

So -- I was playing a lot of Counterstrike at that
point in my life and I just adopted Addicted to Morphine as my handle,
and a lot of people seemed to like it (ie. people in game would change
their names to all sorts of "Addicted to ...." stuff), and I thought it
was fairly original and went along well with the combat theme of the
game. It was only natural that I would carry this name with me when I
joined mapping sites.

The only downside is that when people type ATM (at the moment) in a post, for a split second I think they're talking about me.

Now how'd you get yours?

I chose "Gollum" because it characterised my preferred style of play in FPS games. I like to sneak up behind people and strangle them.

And also, of course, because of my affection for the Tolkien stories.

Not a particularly good reason or nickname.

Obvious. I think Bill Waterson is a genius. All of my online/gaming names have been one of Calvin's alter-egos. When I play starcraft, I am Space Man Spiff or Stupendous Man... my two computers are named Calvin, and Hobbes. Besides, a name like Tracer Bullet goes quite well with FPS games, and DoD in particular.

Mine doesn't have any real interesting story or reason - I just loved the character of the same name in Final Fantasy VII. The way his care free attitude and messy appearance contrast completely with the rest of the Turks and Shinra. His moral ambiguity (he isn't a bad guy really, yet he so totally is). His playful camaraderie with the other turks, and cheeky arrogance to the players. He also looked as cool as 20 or so polygons can manage to

I couldn't agree with you more. Did you pick up the complete
leatherbound collection that they came out with this fall? It's
humongous, and slightly expensive, but well worth it. Every strip
he's ever done is in there, dated, and some of it in full color.
There's also an original foreward, which offers some insight into his
life. I really enjoyed reading it.

A few years back a friend of mine wanted me to attend a LAN party (I
had never been to one before) and when he was about to sign me up on a
web page for it he said I needed a nickname. Can't remember who came up
with the name. My real name is Osman, so my nickname became OtZman.
Since then I've kept it and I must say I'm happy with it.

You know, occasionally I go by my real name in game, with the hope that
someone I know in real life will recognize me and it can be a crazy coincidence.

Hasn't happened yet, and it's not likely to, but I still think the idea is appealing

My name came from a frustration with my inability to pick a name. It started out pretty bad. First up was Orcish Demolisher.
Then Pizza.
Then Bait.
Then Pizza(bait).

Finally, I got pissed at myself, stepped back, and tried to pick a name that discribed my playing style. Sence I tend to blow up during the middle of a match and kill a bunch of people (virtual people if your worried  ), Kilauea seemed like a good choice. Then I added Dark_ to the front for originallity.

Just.. Don't ask me where pizza came from, cuz I have no idea.

Sadly, most of the people in my real life are either so stupid, or so not into gaming that they do not hear "Orpheus" when I say it. I show many people Snarkpit. I show them my paltry attempts at mapping and they go wow.. The see my name and say, "Why did you name yourself Orifice?"

sighs

You'd be surprised how many people never heard of Orpheus and just assume that I spelled Orifice incorrectly. As if I'd actually call myself such.

I don't know which is more insulting. The fact that they know what an orifice is, or that they think I misspelled it.

Mine was a misspelling of my, old callsine: Star.

I was about 10, and was able to beat the rest of my family in Descent,
so I adopted the name. Later, when making a file for another
game(don't ask me which), at that point I thought it was kind of
retarded, so I typed it in sloppily, and Stadric was the result.

now, surveys and quizzes the internet over know me as Stadric Gonzalez.(Gonzalez isn't my real last name, I just thought it fit)

My name is just a name that some guy called a bad guy in a book I read called OTHERLAND. Cash car Star has read it, it's a great series.

Before that I was Fearless_Flea because Fearless Flea was my name as a skier when I was a little guy.

Before that I was CodGod. A variant of my name BEFORE that which was Codpiece5000. www.dictionary.com for what a codpiece is.

Before that, I actually just had the name "Brad" I've been on the internet a LONG time. I actually had the email Brad@hotmail.com before hotmail was microsoft.

Chrono Trigger was the first RPG I played through all those year ago (~1996 was when I got a hold of it). I have fond memories of it. When I tried to come up with a handle during lans or something ... it'd be a really big pain in the ass, since I'd get the 3rd degree if I just used "Adam" or something, so I used Crono, the name of the main character from that beloved (good) squaresoft game.

Sadly. Others have done the same. So, there are variations like Crono83, or 03, or Chrono03. I think that last one was generated by my banks website, because crono was taken, so I said "sure, whatever".

Nothing fancy.

Hawkins, YES, I hate it when people call me by this internet handle in actual conversation ... like in IMs ... *cough*Morphine*cough*

Oh yeah, when I play ghost recon, I'm "Cpt. Annihilation", guess why.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Ive killed every hardcore boss in the final fantasy games. Including
the FF8's omega weapon at the end of the game, not using the cheapo
method of getting the potions that make you invincible.

I soon moved on to playing all the other FF games, my goal being to kill all the bosses that are considered the "omega weapons".

Soon my friends game me the name "omega slayer" because I knew all
strategies on how to kill them. Kinda lame I know, but it stuck with me.

Then this little game was dropped into my lap: Half Life. Upon beating
the game (took me a week to do it in the summer), I tried my hand at
the deathmatch.

As soon as I hopped in I dominated the server, I would "slay" everyone.
At this time I had the alias ASE (my initials closely resembles ACE).
But then so did about 100 other people.

So I changed it to OmegaSlayer.

Then I discovered hammer, and then I found this little nitche in the
Half Life community, and I choose omegaslayer as the alias I would use.

Ask your Mom where I got my name..

No really, I used to be a dead on shot with a Scout in OLD CS Like 1.3.. and People would yell That was a MoneyShot.. and pretty soon everyone started calling me MoneyShot. I changed it twice since then, but I alwasy seem to go back to it, it just seems to stick, it fits me. ( no pun intended.. ok maybe it was. )

Names I have had in the past..

UNSEEN - BBS days, I thought it was clever.. back then..
PHANTOM - A variation of UNSEEN. Also was a comic hero I read back then.
MICDEES - Nick name from the Army, seems MCDOWELL is too damn hard for people to say.
RUMBLESTEELESKIN - Was a Character I had in a Game called Shadowrun.

Im sure there are others I have put in the recesses of my mind, to live in the shame of darkness I denigh daily. =)

I can use my real name and people won't really notice. With a name like Rainer not everyone believes you

Well, I've carried 2 handles throughout the ages. My first was
sHo0tThEcHiCkEn. That originated at a TFC LAN Party when I was
8. One of the guys was really good, and his name was
Chicken. So we all teamed up on him, and I changed my name to
that. Carried that for ages until I wanted multiple accounts on
some website (can't remember) so I needed something else.

I went with ()))Crayola))_> for a long time after that, not quite
sure where that one came from. But eventually I got bored and
felt the need for a change.

That morning I'd had French Toast (that's the exciting story behind
this name) and I'm a fan of it. Unfortunately, it's been taken
before, so I'll go with French n Toasty or FrenchandToasted.

'Tis aout all.

The very first day I got my first PC, I installed a copy of Klingon Honor Gaurd that I bought at the same time. My Cousin was helping me at first, and when it came time to create a player profile he went to type Jim, and typed Juim by accident. I immediately thought it sounded kind of klingon'ish ( and being the big giant Star Trek nerd I am of course) I said to leave it and it has stuck ever since.

The source of the name Wil5on is something I take to the grave. I got the name in 2003, before I signed up here.

My previous name, TriStar, was from an aircraft, the Lockheed L-1011 Tristar. Why I chose this aircraft, I dont remember, but probably because it had an engine in the tail and thats pretty cool. That name lasted until I realised it was pretty crappy.

I am known to many as simply "wilson". I dont mind being called that IRL, and in some situations actually prefer it over my real name.

Cursing/obscene language and leet speek and certain numbers give me a bad impression. Certain words too. You know you need to stay away from a n00b if their name is something like "Beerdrinker69" or something and they are like 12 yrs old. it's just stupid and they are probably a dumdum. people who use 69, 666, and 999 normally get a bad impression, tohugh 999 not as much. Cussing is just stupid, and leet is just annoying whereas it used to be cool.

My handle, however, is old. (If I could change it with out changing the join date I would.)

Although, years back I wanted to find somethon very few people would
use. So I came up with y2kBen_2000. Not many people would
go by 2 y2k.

But now, everwhere I sign up, I use "Ncyphe" (In-Cyphe) and sometimes
"NcypheX". Derived from cypher, but that name was too common, and
cyphe felt like a kids nickname. So I thought about it and felt
adding an N would make the name sound better. Played Natural
Selection one day nad the commander couldn't even pronounce my
name. He called me "hey that N-guy."
You know, I've actually got nothing to say

I think you could change it, but I can't do it for you. Ask Gwil, I think he has the access rights. Personally I quite like Cyphe, but find Ncyphe quite awkward looking.

I just like the way "cyphe" sounds. Cyphe. Cyphe.

My Snarkpit username, which I also use in some games like DoD and CS:S,
is a farming tool. When I was playing DoD for the first time(beta 1.0
or something like that an eternity ago) I wanted to use a nick that has
multiple meaning. The right one being the farming tool.

When I play RTS games I usually go by the nick Wereaser. Something I invented when we had a LAN party with some friends. In CS I've used such names as I LIVE FOR YOUR PAIN!(after a song by Helloween) and Incinerated God Of Deception and recently with CS:S I've been playing with the name Diabolical Cough Medicin.

"Kain", in the Bible, is the first assassin who murders his brother; and it's also the name of the character who dies the most horrible death in the movie Alien I, one of my favorite movies. I think that's why I've always used this nickname while playing CS, and online in general; plus the fact that it sounds sharp and cool!

'fisheye and the egyptians' was my all time favourite band name, though we were never really a real band. i don't know why, but it just sounds so right.

Got pepper from my rabbit as mentioned earlier, but online i tend to go around as The Almighty Snark, as im kind of obssed with these cute little buggers. Also because of my Rush-to-death tactics never work out  .

This is one of the most interesting threads I've come across for a long time. I love it.

It's friendly, not too serious, and no one is yelling at anyone or calling any names. It reminds me of the old SnarkPit I used to love.

I am taking a break at writing my book. I've been at it all day (well, except for an hour this morning playing Counter-Strike).

Anyways, my moniker has a story (sort of). "satchmo" is the official nickname of Louis Armstrong, the jazz virtuoso. I am a big jazz fan. "satchmo" is short for "satchelmouth". When little Louis blew the cornet, his cheeks puffed out greatly like a "satchel". That's how his name originated. In fact, "satchmo" is on all of Armstrong's letterheads.

After reading several of Louis Armstrong's biography, I started using "satchmo" in my email addresses (at yahoo and hotmail). That was before I started playing games.

When I registered for the first online community (at TWHL), it's easy to come up with an anonymous alias. "satchmo" is the most obvious candidate.

First time I ever went to a network cafe with friends, about the time I
started serious gaming. I sat down at my booked computer and the name
already in use was Agent Smith. Being a bit of a noob at the time I
didn't know how to change it, so I just used it. It stuck and now thats
my oh so creative handle.

Of course now to avoid being called a noob everytime I play CS I use
the handle Agent Smith Bob Huyuck, implying I am in fact the hick
cousin of Agent Smith.
