I've been offered a job...

Hey guys, just thought I'd let you guys know that I've been offered my first games industry job! It's for a small company called Outerlight, who you may remember made the Half-Life mod The Ship. That was a prototype to test their game design and gauge interest, and though fairly rough around the edges, it showed a lot of potential. Since then they hired a fair few more people, licensed the Source engine, and are due for a release of the game proper on Steam sometime in May.

I spoke to them at a jobs fair and, due to my experience with the HL1 and Source engines, and my mix of design and programming abilities, they phoned me up a few days later and asked me in for an interview. That interview was a couple of days back, and while there are a few things I would have changed about it if I could, in general it went well. I heard back from them today and they made me an offer, which I took them up on.

The position is as a part of the design team, but I will also be involved in some (mostly design oriented) programming. To me this sounds just about ideal, as though level design is what I would say is my main career focus, I do enjoy programming and hopefully this position will offer me the best of both worlds.

I should be joining them soon after I finish my uni course in May - woohoo!

Good to hear it turned out to be interesting and relevant ReNo, i'm
sure you can do great things with them. I'd say it could be a blessing
in disguise, moving you over to programming oriented design - broaden
the horizons and all that, considering your mapping skills are pretty
much on par all the time already.

Not me. I am proud as punch for those who desire the job but, look at all the flack Andrew got after Quake 4 was released. No one cared, or seemed to care for his feeling much.

I don't want to be one of the guys people talk about behind their hands. Think of all the flack the crew at the Duke Nukem team has to endure. I bet you anything, it wasn't the mappers that stalled the games release.

I hate working, but I like my job enough to retain it. The flexibility is phenomenal. I work when and if I want. I won't get rich, but I'm used to being poor so its not a concept that bothers me much anymore.

I used to be in supervisory positions. I went from, my children being born, to them in school, to grand children in just a couple years. Or so it seemed.

I will never work an 80 hour a week job again, but I lost all those years. My children are grown and gone....

But you deserved it, you've got an impressive mapping portfolio and you know how to program (terrain generator thing was great !).

Nah, you do need to be a member of the media or industry. I'm sure there are other ways, but typically, thems the rules! I won't be starting at Outerlight until after e3, and as the newbie in the company its not likely I'd be going anyway, but one day I hope to make it :smile:

I took a close look at them a few months back, looks like a nice place to work.
