I don't think this has been done before and I do think it could be interesting...

Whatever your option, please specify what type of the named religion
you are (Christian - Catholic/Protestant etc) and why. Post what
religion you believe in and not what religion you were born into,
unless that's what you believe in of course.

Oh, and no bitching about how some religions are better than other or whatever.

(On a side note, curse you Lep for only allowing 6 options!)

Personally, I was born into the Protestant Christian country of Sweden
in a pretty much atheist family. My grandfather on my father's side was
a Pentecostalist vicar and my dad was raised with deep inner hate to
it. As soon as he left home he broke all contact with a God that had
been forced upon him. In this home religion has always been looked at
as "opium for the people" but now that I'm old enough to think for
myself I've come to doubt that life is as simple as the physical world.
I do not believe in any gods but I do believe in a connection between
all living beings, possibly also in reincarnation. I therefore vote
"Other".

I'm agnostic I guess. Atheists actively DISbelieve in god. I'm just apathetic toward it.

I was born into a Hindu family. I haven't thought about it much more
than that, I guess. I voted Hindu because that's what it says on all my
documents :/

I'm a chirstian, and unlike many in my town, I am not a catholic. I guess I could be called a protestant, even though I really don't belong to any church. I spend most of my time by myself, reading the bible and stuff.

Im a muslim and proud of it XD, despite of some of the retard muslims
like binladen, who killed inoccents for no reasons, and ruined the
islamic look, well i just cant tell why most people think muslims are
terrorists...

Anyway, im a muslim becuase im born in an islamic country ( UnitedArabEmarites)

Where there are plenty of different religions all together, christains\hindu\others

Well islam doesnt specify any racism, so i must say that i dont hate
any known religion...eg. Jewish\christian for the others, well i dont
know about that but i dont care too

 and by the way, i hope i dont get flamed or anything becuase im a muslim...uhh i dont think i would be right ?

Don't worry, most of us are very understanding of different people. I for one, don't feel any hate toward any muslim because of their religon. I do have problems with those that do their own thing and then try to justify it by saying Allah/God told them to.

Technically, i'm orthodox...practically deist. I mean come on, it's
always so easy to blame satan when you're having bad luck (and bad luck
is usually your own doing anyway). And I think God has better things to
do than make icons cry just for the heck of it.

Atheist, because I don't like to follow rules and guidlines set by
religions. I live a good life, generally a nice person, I don't need to
class myself into a religion and honestly don't believe any of them.

If I could get past the notion that virtually "ALL" of the worlds worse atrocities have their roots based in some form of a religion then I could possibly accept one.

Being religious doesn't mean you are participating in an evil concept but, many evil concepts are religiously based.

On the other hand, I do not necessarily exclude all concepts that can lead to evil. Brutal sexual acts are abhorrent to me, but sex in general, well.

I vote Agnostic.

I believe in myself. When s**t happens, it's frequently my own
mistake that caused it. When good things happens, it's also of my
doing. I take full responsibilities for my action. I
don't blame or praise God or anyone else.

I was raised in Taiwan, with two atheist parents. China and
Taiwan are predominantly Buddhist, but they also have a significant
Christian following. I have an aunt whose family is fanatically
Christian. She dragged me to the church on many occasions when I
was younger, but I usually ended up debating with the priest about
evolution and creationism.

I am an atheist, but I don't despise religion. In
fact, I think if there is no God, then there is a need for men to
invent a God and religion. A lifetime of calamity for some
requires a supreme being to support ones' sanity. And the vast
majority of religious people end up doing good things because they are
religious.

However, the negative aspect of having religion is that it inherently creates
factions. And this world doesn't really need more
fractionalization than it already has.

The only religion that I can even remotely relate to is Buddhism.
It really doesn't mind other people's business. If someone
doesn't believe in Buddhism, he/she doesn't automatically go to
hell. As long as someone lives a good life and does good deeds,
he/she is rewarded in the afterlife.

Now, that's the kind of tolerance I think more religions need.

I suppose I'd say I have a faith of sorts and beliefs of my own, but they don't really fit properly in any religion. Not to mention, I think most religions are very poorly structured. Not to offend anyone, I'm not attacking them by any means, it's just an observation.

As for beliefs, they'd probably would be most similar to Muslim and Christian religions (taking that they really only have one fundamental difference).

There's just some things that don't make sense about some religions. Like ... how certain emotions, that you feel naturally are 'bad'. So to speak, since for them to be truly punishable, you'd need someone who cannot sympathize with the emotion ... but that isn't true, since God, supposedly, created everything. Do you see how this would continue on? It's a catch 22 of sorts. So, I've decided to just live my life how I see fit. I'm not a bad person and I've never done anything to purposefully harm someone, so, that's good enough for me.

I really think the only time religions are followed well are when the people who follow them are very speculative. Since, it would make them analyze things to understand it more. Usually the people you see who give religion a really bad name (specifically the Muslim and Christian religions) are people who do not follow them, they just blindly agree, or use it to progress their own agenda.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

I'm a christian maronit (that's a form of oriental catholicism), and even though I don't completely have faith in the biblical God (that I find sometimes caricatural), I think religion in general, and especially christianism, creates a strong bond between people, and teaches the correct principles of love and generosity (at least theoretically...). So I voted 1.

I'm a christian.

I'm born in and raised in a christian family but that doesn't make one
a christian. To follow Christ, you'll have to make a decision yourself,
it's not something you get through your birth or anything else. About a
6 years ago I made that choice and while before that I didn't really understand
what made the other people in church made so happy and so convinced, I did after I made that choice.

It has only gotten better since I started to get to know more of God, who He is and what He's planning to do in our lives.

My brother married a Mormon, even though she's not a very strict
Mormon. My brother remains an atheist, and I have no idea how
they reconciled that point.

I am glad that my wife is not religious. I would hate to give up gaming time to attend church every Sunday.

we were genetically engineered from apes by the 'gods' that live on the tenth planet, who dropped in on earth for our gold reserves and didn't want to get their own hands dirty mining it.. they're not really gods though, not as religions would define what a god is, but try telling that to a nomadic goatherder from 6000 years ago, when he's seen them 'descend from the heavens in their firey chariots'.

so i suppose that would make me protestant/christian.

Since it doesn't exactly seem sinful to believe in a religion, how about we start our own that addresses all the woes we dislike in the current practices?

I promise to not begin any wars, kill innocents nor bungle little boys if we begin a new one.

No one can prove the non-existence
of anything. To accomplish it, one has to be omniscient
first. And no reasonable, sane person would claim to be
omniscient.

I'm a pagan... or actually I can't even think of WHAT I believe
in... I think there is somekind of a greater power but this whole
god-thing... seems a bit unbelieveable. One night ago I was in the
kitchen and scowering the fridge and someone just flushed their toilet
somewhere... or washed hands in the sink... and I thought as if someone
whispered my name... I heard it twice... it still creeps me, I do not
dare to go to kitchen anymore or anywhere away from computer... I don't
like such things... I don't believe in ghosts but this is weird... and
this whispering sounded like my dead mum or granny... i'm getting
shivers from thoughts of it... and the very same day I went nuts and
started seeing VIS things as I explained in other thread... I think I
really AM going nervous and paranoind... and insane

Anyway, as I said, I am more like a pagan. I don't want to believe in
god or anything but my subconcious tells me there IS some sort of
greater power... the very same power that gave me second chance in the
rows of love, the very power that arranged things so that my initials
would be IT and so that I would really know a lot about information
technology... The very power that made me non-afraid of death, the very
power that has saved me so many times from bad situations... (it was
not the power of my brainskills, no siree, it had to be something else)

The more I think about all the odd things happened to me, I start
feeling weird, just as if something was actually in control of our
lives... a higher power... perhaps it's just faith? Destiny? The task
of our lives? Afterall, when you have reached your purpose of life, you
are no longer necessary... I think there are certain things that will
make us necessary until those things are succeeded and then we are
without purpose... and without purpose we would not exist.

First off, the tree in the woods experiment solved that dilemma ages ago. Secondly, my wife once claimed that I was Omni-directional. Is that close enough?

SubGenius here- it was only $30 and I have a wierd sense of humor
(and the Dobbs head looks cool). I'm really more of a
graduate of the church now since I (mostly) cast it off and created my
own religion. It's pretty sweet being a holy man some times.

While I don't believe in specific God(s)/Goddess(es) with power over us
I do believe in other beings/entities that at least interact with us.

I'm currently interested in parallels between technology and religion.
Such as Astral Projection and the Internet/MMOGs. Or the commonly
shared religious belief that "God created man in his own image" and how
we are now playing God by trying to create Artificial Life/Intelligence
(often in our own image).

While all organized world religions I've studied up on have some really
interesting mythologies and explanations for our situation, for the
most part I feel they were set up to keep people in line. That
whole "seperation of church and state" thing was one of the most
brilliant ideas of modern civilization IMO.

I'm an atheist, cause agnosticism is for pussies.

But really, I see no reason to beleive in a god. I'm no good at putting stuff like this into words... but I guess I just think that there being an omniscient being making arbitrary decisions about how the universe behaves makes no sense. I beleive everything (including life itself, consciousness etc.) can be scientifically analysed and understood. There is nothing particularly special about something that is alive, something that is self-aware, it's just a collection of particles.

I dont believe in anything. I think religion is a tool used throughout earths history (much less today) to oppress the masses. Also I believe when you die there is nothingness (well hard to put into words...oblivion maybe?).

If I ever did have to choose a religion it would be buddhist.

No offense anyone religious.

Catholic Christian, but not practising. No offence intended to the believers among us, but I don't believe in God, praying, etc at all. The Bible etc originated from a time long before Civilisation came to understand that the World wasn't flat, that the Earth wasn't created in 7 days, before theories of evolution etc etc.

Instead of this poll attempting to cram a million religions into 5 suggestions it would have been more fruitful to have it simply "Do you believe in a God?"

Then if anyone replied they could have posted their base religion. Somehow, with only 5 choices it seems like its cheating many out of their own category. I don't know about you, but if I were into Voodoo, or Satanism I'd feel a bit grumpy about now.

What the hell do Satanists do anyway? I know its something to do with worshipping devil but what else? Do they have to like give people the finger regularly to appease their devil?

Well, for a start, they DON'T slaughter dogs at moonlight and they DON'T consume babies like most CHRISTIANS like to point out.

I find these more logical than anything in the Bible.

If they did I imagine one of two possibilities. Either they give you someone else's fingers, or they shove yours up your....

Yeah they actually are pretty good rules except this one I dont like this one:
Satanic Site said:
7. Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.
And this one's end made me laugh

Ahahahahahaha  I also like how they specify that only "little" children must not be harmed - I guess others are fair game!

The Bible etc originated from a time long before Civilisation came to understand that the World wasn't flat, that the Earth wasn't created in 7 days, before theories of evolution etc etc.
i'm a bit tired of hearing that same lie repeated, so maybe someone could tell me whereabouts in the bible this flat earth claim is made. i know people were persecuted by religious authorities for stating as much, but whatever reasons the spanish inquisition had for their attempt at world domonation, i'm 100% certain that it wasn't based totally on the bible.

seven days of creation is a relic from the sumerian culture, where the creation story is commonly found on sets of seven clay tablets. moses was already well versed in this as he was a priest before he done a runner from egypt. (mock the sumerians at your own peril)

but proving or disproving god is pretty silly talk really, since as far as i can tell, i can't even prove if I exist in the way that i think i do.

There is so much stuff out there one can believe in.....

I stopped believing in some particular thing a long time ago. I can't really describe what my religion is. I tend to belive in different parts of buddhism and shamanism. The major thing that counts is to gain peace.

Therefore I vorted 'other/atheist'

The interesting thing about Satanists (and I have a couple friends who
are) is that they are a sect of christianity. Because Satan is a
character of Christian lore. So you can't be a Satanist without
believing in Christianity (but many members are against
christianity). A rather odd situation I think.

Not really when you consider that it takes a vagina to produce a gay, yet most gay men find the idea nauseating.

There are many examples of a thing existing in spite of its contradictory nature.

So Christianity equals a Vagina, and Gays are equatable to Satanism?

Ethically Jewish? Is that like "yeah guys, I think I'll be Jewish
because their rights, ethics, morals, and ideas. Yet I wasn't born a
Jew"? As far as I have heard, you can't convert to Judiasim, you can
only be born into it. And thats what I think too being a Jew.

ALSO!

I think Satanists are more logical then some Christians. They acually
don't look like they would go running around and killing people.
Their rules bassically say, keep to yourself, and be polite. If someone
is being annoying, be polite ask them to stop... if them don't DESTROY
THEM!
2. Do not tell
your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.
Does that mean Satanists can't have blogs? And this must also mean emo people aren't Satanists!
